Designing With the End in Mind
This week's readings were a good reminder that instructional design starts with the learners, not the technology. It's easy to get excited about a new app or platform, but choosing a tool should come after deciding what students need to learn and how they'll get there (Zgheib & Dabbagh, 2020). When technology is selected with a clear purpose, it becomes a way to strengthen learning instead of distracting from it.
As an elementary teacher, I see this all the time. The best lessons aren't necessarily the ones with the newest technology. They're the ones where every part of the lesson has a purpose. Sometimes a simple digital tool is all students need to collaborate, explain their thinking, and stay focused on the learning objective. This week's readings reinforced that thoughtful instructional design is about making intentional choices that support both the learners and the lesson.
