Learning by Design

  This week's readings were a good reminder that instructional design starts with the learners, not the technology. It's easy to get excited about a new app or platform, but choosing a tool should come after deciding what students need to learn and how they'll get there (Zgheib & Dabbagh, 2020). When technology is selected with a clear purpose, it becomes a way to strengthen learning instead of distracting from it. As an elementary teacher, I see this all the time. The best lessons aren't necessarily the ones with the newest technology. They're the ones where every part of the lesson has a purpose. Sometimes a simple digital tool is all students need to collaborate, explain their thinking, and stay focused on the learning objective.
